Premier League, December 20 2015
Quique Sánchez Flores arrived in the Premier League in the summer of 2015 to become the fifth manager in charge of Watford in 12 months. The club was embarking on their first season back in the top flight since 2006/07, having achieved direct promotion by finishing second in the Championship the previous season.
From the end of November 2015, Sánchez Flores led the team on a five-game unbeaten run that led to him being named the Premier League Manager of the Month for December; striker Odion Ighalo earned the Player of the Month accolade alongside him.
Chief among those results was an impressive 3-0 win at home against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool which left moved them up to seventh in the league.
In this exclusive video from The Coaches’ Voice, Sánchez Flores talks us through how he set up his team to counter the pressing style that Klopp had been introducing into his Liverpool side since arriving at the club two months earlier – and reveals the pre-match calculation that helped to inform the way he wanted his team to play.
Watford went on to finish the season 13th in the league and reached the semi finals of the FA Cup. Liverpool finished in eighth place and reached the finals of the Europa League and League Cup, finishing as runners up to Sevilla and Manchester City respectively.
