Alan Stubbs

Player, Celtic, 1996-2001

“That fear of losing seemed to have drained all their energy out of them before they’d even kicked the ball on the pitch.”

Former Celtic captain Alan Stubbs experienced 24 Old Firm encounters as a player. Here, he talks exclusively to The Coaches’ Voice about his memories of the very first, and reflects on how games against Rangers came to be the ones he looked forward to the most. He also discusses how the intense nature of the Old Firm game had a negative influence on some players, and how that can be managed by coaches in the build-up to a big game.
