Maresca is among the most highly rated coaches in modern football. In the early part of the 2023/24 season, he had guided Leicester to the top of the Championship, well-placed to push for promotion to the Premier League.

At Leicester, as well as in previous spells as head coach of Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad and with Parma, he has made use of an inverted full-back. He also assisted Pep Guardiola during Manchester City’s treble-winning campaign, where the concept of a player from the back line joining the midfield was employed.
