The emergence of Emile Smith Rowe has not only made him a central figure in reviving Arsenal’s 2020/21, it has perhaps made him one of the most exciting new additions to the Premier League and, more significantly, alongside Bukayo Saka given Mikel Arteta’s team a new identity. Not since Jack Wilshere’s mature performances throughout 2010/11 has one of the club’s youth products made so dramatic an impact, and to the extent expectations surrounding his abilities are likely to soon be similarly high.
Discussing Saka and Smith Rowe, Arsenal’s manager, once a teammate of Wilshere’s, said: “When we are winning they put a smile on my face. I know what they are capable of doing; they are developing really well. The performances they are putting in are extraordinary.”
