In August 2018, Brighton and Chris Hughton hosted Manchester United and José Mourinho in the Premier League.

United had already won their opening league fixture of the 2018/19 season, on the same weekend Brighton had lost theirs, but Hughton and his team were determined to respond and to pursue their own ambitions – building on preserving the club’s Premier League status for the first time ever in 2017/18, which they had done that May with a victory over the very same opposition.

The Seagulls made an impressively fast start, scoring twice in three first-half minutes and responding to a Romelu Lukaku goal by restoring their two-goal advantage on the stroke of half-time. Here, in this exclusive feature with The Coaches’ Voice, Hughton revisits his approach to overcoming one of the world’s biggest clubs in an eventual 3-2 victory.
