Manchester City’s first foray in the Women’s Champions League saw them progress all the way through to the semi-final stage, where they came up against a Lyon side in search of a second successive European title (and fourth overall). After watching his side lose 3-1 in the first leg at the Academy Stadium in Manchester, City manager Nick Cushing knew they faced a massive task in the second leg at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais. Here, he explains the selections and tactics that secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory on the night and inflicted a rare defeat on the French champions – but one that was not quite enough to stop them reaching the final, where they duly won a fourth Champions League title.
